first, I must apologize for my absence. My position in ARES/RACES in Wisconsin has two parts. One is training and the other is section coordination. I will not burden with details of my absences, you will be hearing more about that as the details are worked out.
As leadership in any organization our main job is, or should be to train our successor. But to do that we need to be trained as leaders ourselves.
Thats right! you read that correctly. Leaders are trained.
To many, this may come as a surprise. True leadership is taught. While those that seek leadership have drive, ambition and a host of other attributes. Failure to mold them correctly can cause things to go off the rails. There are several examples of this going badly throughout history.
There are also the opposite situations, well educated, well intentioned people take rolls they have not been given proper leadership training to do. This can lead to a stagnant type of leadership where nothing changes and the "people" feel they are left out. We only have to look too poor Louis the XVI for how that worked out. I hope they enjoyed that cake LOL. (I try to inject a little humor into a complex subjects, how am I doing?)
So now the the meat of the subject. I have trained leaders in the US Army and civilian world for many years. During that time we developed a flexible concept that I have used to work with soldiers from battalion commanders to team leaders in the civilian world. It is very simple and is use to build on as we go forward we will use this concept to improve our leadership skills and our relationships across the board, with EM's and other client agencies and of course our teams.
I am not asking you to change your life, or anything of the sort, just think about the the following:
(Since we are able to influence only ARES/RACES (A/R) leadership here when I say leadership that is who I mean.)
This is how to start to use this concept.
" A/R Leadership should be"
Reliable,
Approchable,
Accountable,
Visable.
These four simple words, as leaders can change how an organization is operated. It may seem corny at first, I get it. But think about it for a minute. If you put the word NOT in-front of those four words, how well will anything work?
This is a lot to consider for the week.
So thats enough for this week, Next week (unless the world implodes) we will look at reliability in terms of leadership.
